Yamaha Virago with a Whole New Look

Yamaha Virago XV920 streetfighter

Yamaha Virago XV920 streetfighter

The name Yamaha Virago is not usually followed by the words cafe racer or streetfighter but here's something that might change your mind. My usual cruise through the eBay listings turned up this custom, definitely a long way from its beginnings as a Virago XV920. Last year I found a Virago with a Norton look which a lot of you liked, so here's another direction for that tired old bike sitting in your garage or maybe a neat conversion for one of those used Viragos you can pick up cheap for a very reasonable price.

It still has the easy maintenance shaft drive but there's a new tail section and seat, nice paint job and that Virago twin that just keeps going and going.

Of course you can change the look of an old Yamaha Maxim, too, if you prefer inline fours to V-Twins. Your choice.

There are a lot of nice bikes out there, but sometimes they're hidden in plain sight and look like tired old metric cruisers. Add imagination and a bit of work and you might be surprised at what you end up with. I like it.

Yamaha YZF-R6

Yamaha YZF-R6

Hardcore, know the score. The Yamaha YZF-R6 is a sexy uber-capable track bike that works on the road too. It caught the 600 race rep class napping and nothing came close until Suzuki launched its 2001 GSX-R600 – that’s a long time to rule the 600 roost and shows just how good the original Yamaha YZF-R6 was.The Yamaha YZF-R6 loves to rev – a 15,500 rpm redline was high for the time. And it’s powerful. 160mph fast doesn’t sound amazing in these days of 180+mph bikes but unleashing the Yamaha YZF-R6's 108bhp certainly feels pretty special. The midrange is surprisingly meaty too although the top end rush hides it. The gearbox isn’t the smoothest but it’s at least a match for most Hondas.

Light, rapid steering and hard to fault on the track – ultimately the Yamaha YZF-R6's pegs will touch down but that takes some doing. The bars will waggle under power but the Yamaha YZF-R6 is a fast steering track bike so that’s to be expected. It can’t quite match the composition and easy turn in of the latest supersport 600s but it’s a small difference – chassis wear will be more significant on most machines.Sports bikes don’t have to be crippling and impractical. And the Yamaha YZF-R6 is neither. The riding position’s pretty reasonable – touring’s possible although the seat could benefit from a gel insert. The Yamaha YZF-R6's instruments are comprehensive for the era and include an extra trip meter triggered by the fuel reserve. Above average underseat storgage, good headlights, passable mirrors.

The Yamaha YZF-R6's finish is a mixed bag. Plenty of major parts resist the rigors of rain and salt well. But a few smaller parts let the Yamaha YZF-R6 down. Bolts, brackets and fasteners plus a handful of bigger components fur or rust up far too easily. Major Yamaha YZF-R6 reliability problems are extremely rare. Check for heavy oil consumption and any form of gearbox fault. This is a popular, but value for money, class and it’s hard fought on price. The Yamaha YZF-R6 is not only the best bike from late 1998 to the end of 2000 it’s the best looking too so prices hold up quite well. Suzuki’s GSX-R is track capable but poor on the road, Honda’s CBR is a sound machine but revvy and the Kawaski’s more road focused.

Valentino Rossi Yamaha R1 Motorcycle Will be Auctioned at No Reserve for Charity

Bonhams will be auctioning a truly one-of-a-kind motorcycle offered in collaboration with the most successful motorcycle racer of his era, Valentino Rossi.

As written about in the April 2010 issues of both Cycle World and Motorcyclist, a highly upgraded and customized 2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 1000cc – the civilian version of the MotoGP bike campaigned by World Champion Rossi – will be offered for sale with no reserve at Bonhams’ third annual motorcycle auction at Quail Lodge on May 14th.

Sporting Rossi’s personal “Five Continents” AGV helmet design, this amazing and very specialized motorcycle was the brainchild of former racing champion and AMA Hall of Famer Don Emde. Emde founded the non-profit Friends of Riders For Health to further the cause in America of Riders For Health, a charitable organization that brings life-saving medicines to people in remote areas of Africa by way of motorcycles.  As a way to generate funds for Riders For Health, Emde conceived of this project and then invited the “who’s who” of the motorcycling world to participate.

“Once we got Rossi’s blessing, everyone jumped aboard,” says Emde. Yamaha Motor Corp. USA donated the brand new stock machine, Aldo Drudi translated the graphics from Rossi’s helmet to the R1’s special bodywork imported from Italy, Roland Sands donated Ronin wheels, Bridgestone added BT-003 tires, Öhlins gave suspension, Akrapovic provided exhaust, EBC did brakes, and the list goes on – Vortex, Goodridge, Dynojet, etc. Just with improvements the bike’s value is nearly $30,000, and that’s without the significance of the project and Rossi’s involvement.

This incredible team effort R1, personally autographed by Rossi, will be presented in “track day” trim but it is fully street legal and will be offered with all the necessary accessories and California title. On top of that, Yamaha will donate a day at the Yamaha Champions Riding School for the winning bidder. 100% of the proceeds from this sale will go to Riders For Health.
